The destination beyond grades
Congratulations! Whether your child is the top of their cohort or struggling to keep up with their peers, one thing is for sure; they have a parent who is doing their best in finding out how to help them constantly achieve more.
The year is 2017 and while grades are important, our society demands more than just brilliance in academics.
We want our children to become outstanding individuals. We want their personalities to shine, we want to have a smile on our face twenty years from now knowing that our kids are set for life.
With and without the A’s
It is a never-ending race competing on academics alone. We, as parents have been through this process and we know that in today’s society, success is heavily influenced by more than just paper qualifications.
Yes, of course perfect grades are desirable but there is something else which will benefit your child more than full marks and it is called interpersonal skills.
Climbing the corporate ladder, leading a team, planning an event, holding a conference to even handling a romantic relationship are all heavily reliant on interpersonal skills!
We have been in the working world and plenty of times, problems are not solved through textbook examples. Successfully solving conflicts in a team to conducting a splendid sales presentation in front of a hundred people is not reliant on algebra or the curve of the graph. Interpersonal skills, parents!
Having the best of both worlds…
According to a study conducted by the University of California, school children exposed to the arts may do a better job at mastering reading, writing and math compared to those who focus solely on academics.
“Notions that the arts are frivolous add-ons to a serious curriculum couldn’t be further from the truth,” says James Catterall, education professor at the University of California-Los Angeles, who coordinated the research.
…with Latin Dance!
Latin dancing is a viable activity in helping a child achieve both interpersonal skills and persistence in achieving better results. These are some factors which through Latin dancing will help enhance a child’s growth:
Confidence & Self-Presentation Skills
An obvious benefit of learning dance and performing in front of a crowd is the enhancement of a child’s confidence.
Through dancing, an individual is able to express their creativity and learn how to eliminate Glossophobia (speech anxiety/ stage fright). This is cultivated from young. If a child is constantly exposed to the stage, they are less likely to be intimidated by large scale presentations and will have no problem interacting with strangers when they are older.
The morale boost from the audience clapping and cheering also increases a child’s self-esteem and from that, they will gain experience in overcoming their anxieties.
In academics, confidence aids a child in asking for help when needed. Many children fall behind in their grades because they have a fear of being judged. By understanding that it is okay to not know everything, children will be more willing to ask for help when necessary.
Physical Fitness
Dancing provides a child an outlet for self-expression. Through choreography and creative elements in Latin dance, children will be able to develop new ideas and learn to have a more flexible mind set.
Dancing is known to release endorphins just like exercising. It keeps a child physically active and helps them feel more positive too!
Obesity in Singapore is rising and according to the Health Promotion Board, obesity rates could hit 15% by 2024. In our day and age, many children grow up with electronic devices and it isn’t inaccurate to link the cause of weight gain to a child’s habits.
For children who spend their weekends cooped up on their tablets and desktops, they miss out on the social and physical aspects of their peers who channel their energy into socializing and having ample exercise. Cultivating the habit of communication at a young age will guide them in expanding their social circle and forging valuable friendships in the future.
Academics wise, according to May 2013 Harvard Men’s Health Watch, regular exercise will improve concentration and mental sharpness. Latin dance will not only provide the regular exercise but also allow our children to practice self-expression which is beneficial in group work and oral exams.
Teamwork, Problem Solving & Determination
As Latin dancing is also about social interaction and co-operation with partners, children will be exposed to peers of different backgrounds and learn how to work with each other. Interactions like these will go a long way in our children’s growth and teach them how to get along with others.
Etiquette is an important factor which is emphasized in Latin dance. Dancers are taught to not blame their partners and to help each other become better dancers.
During our daily adult lives, we face disagreements from colleagues, clients, superiors and even family. By understanding that not everyone they meet will agree with them early on in life, our children will learn to be more reasonable and develop skills on how to handle disputes like a lady or gentleman.
Encouraging their partners and team mates are an important etiquette factor as well. They will be given plenty of opportunities to get used to praising their fellow dancers and experience the positive emotion of being genuinely happy for a friend. By displaying trust in team mates and learning how to handle different people positively, our children will be nurtured to be good leaders which attracts admiration from their peers.
In academics, a child learns to not blame others for their results. It isn’t because the question is too difficult or because they are in the best or worst class. It is about them having the motivation to solve the problem to their best ability. As they progress in their dance skills, they will realize that the solution to difficulty is, simply, more practice!
